PARIS, April 18 (Reuters) - A French soldier who was part of international ‌Forces stationed in southern Lebanon was killed, President Emmanuel Macron said on Saturday, adding that evidence suggests Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah was responsible for the attack.Three other soldiers were wounded and have been evacuated, Macron said ‌in a post on X, urging the Lebanese government to act against the alleged perpetrators.

This attack highlights the risks faced by UN peacekeepers in Lebanon, where clashes involving armed groups like Hezbollah and broader regional conflicts continue to create a volatile security environment.

The Risks of the Mandate

UNIFIL currently has over 8,000 peacekeepers from nearly 50 countries. Their mission—to monitor the Blue Line and assist the Lebanese Armed Forces—is becoming nearly impossible when both sides frequently disregard the safety of UN positions.

As UN Under-Secretary-General Jean-Pierre Lacroix recently noted, peacekeepers are remaining in place despite "extremely dangerous conditions," but the persistent targeting of their equipment and personnel suggests that the international "shield" they represent is being tested more severely now than at any point since 2006.

This incident aligns with UNIFIL reports of a peacekeeper killed and three wounded by small-arms fire in Ghandouriyeh village.

Incident Details

The attack occurred during a UNIFIL patrol clearing explosive ordnance along a road to reconnect isolated positions. The French soldier, Staff Sergeant Florian Montorio from the 17th Parachute Engineer Regiment in Montauban, was killed; three others were wounded and evacuated for treatment. Macron stated on social media that evidence points to Hezbollah responsibility and urged Lebanese authorities to arrest the perpetrators.

Context and Response

France, a major contributor to UNIFIL, emphasized the stabilizing role of peacekeepers amid ongoing tensions in southern Lebanon. Macron expressed national support for the soldier's family and all personnel in the mission, demanding accountability from Lebanon alongside UNIFIL. This follows prior attacks on UN forces in the region, highlighting risks to blue helmets.
